In competitive bake-offs, where healthy products are needed, you need a machine that consistently produces the best all-around quality bread. No doubt that it will score the highest customer satisfaction rating. And that’s what the Zojirushi Virtuoso excels at.

This is a device of its kind. It has dedicated settings for gluten-free bread. Also, its lid incorporates an additional heating element producing the best even browning and crusting.

Advantages

The Zojirushi features a rectangular pan. It is one of the best models that can bake a traditional 2-pound loaf of bread, which is suitable for toasting.

With two kneading paddles, this machine is particularly excellent for gluten-free flour. Because it requires extensive kneading and less rising time.

The newer model has a lid with a unique heating element. So, it can get consistently good crust browning. This is something that only convection models can achieve. Also, it does the three standard types of crust: medium, light, and dark.

Usually, these bread makers have three functional cycles: rising, kneading, and baking. For instance, you can decide to knead any dough or even use it as the best proofing or rising chamber.

You can use the baking cycle to make bread cakes, jams, cinnamon rolls, and even meatloaf.

Aside from that, this device has 15 preset options on the Zojirushi. These can make either the traditional types of bread or the sugar-free, gluten-free, salt-free, and vegan options. Therefore, many users find it efficient using the included recipe book, especially the gluten-free alternatives.

There are three slots for the memory. So, you can program your baking course. However, it is essential to note that preset courses are not adjustable. Instead, there is a timer that can be set up to 13 hours. This will offer a delayed start-up.

Also, users should note that the paddles will wear out after a year or more. However, this depends on how much you use them. Fortunately, replacing paddles is easy and quick.

Disadvantages

One major drawback is that the machine can bake one size of bread only — the 2-pound loaf. So, the guide advised that you use active dry yeast rather than rapid rise yeast.

Another problem is that there’s no dispenser in this model. Therefore, you’ll only depend on the program alert to find out when you should add fruits, nuts, or seeds.

Pros

  • A heating element in the lid
  • Three custom settings
  • The best model for gluten-free
  • Extremely versatile
  • 15 preset options

Cons

  • LCD screen not backlit
  • Only makes a 2-lb loaf
  • No dispenser

Although it may not match the Cuisinart or the Zojirushi for quality and evenness of crust, this machine is available at a slightly more affordable price tag. Besides, it has a few thoughtful design features. These put Breville BBM800XL in a category of its own.

The Breville bread machine comes with a top-quality, stainless steel body. Its user interface is well designed, with the most intuitive, and pleasurable-to-use features. Also, the device is a bit smaller and lighter than the Zojirushi.

It has the most notable features, such as the ‘Modify’ button. This enables you to adjust knead, rise, and even bake cycles for any of the 13 automated presets. Aside from that, you can enter up to 9 of your custom courses.

Contrary to the single-size Zojirushi bread maker, this machine can produce four different sizes of bread — 1lb, 1 ½ lb, 2 lb, and 2 ½ lb. Therefore, it’s much more versatile in the size and quantity of bread made.

While it has one paddle only, the machine collapses into its hold before you begin to bake. This helps you to minimize the size of the hole at the bottom of the loaf. Also, it has a swivel. That helps a lot with kneading compared with other one-paddle pans.

Contrary to some models, the Breville bread machine has a dispenser tray. Therefore, you can conveniently add extra ingredients at the beginning of the cycle rather than halfway through.

On top of that, the machine has a pause button that allows you to interrupt any process. So, you alter the add bread designs or even cancel or modify a recipe.

Although other models come with a limited power back-up function, the Breville bread machine features a 60-minute back-up. This rescues your bread in case there is an electrical outage. What are the other additional features?

They include a light in the window that reveals the bread-making process. Also, the device has a sound-mute button to allow overnight baking. Besides, the machine has a specialized paddle for stirring jams. On top of that, it features a cord wrap at the back of this device.

Pros

  • Stylish and top-class interface
  • Dispenser tray
  • Most programmable model
  • 13 adjustable preset options
  • Four different loaf sizes
  • Collapsible paddle
  • Nine custom settings

Cons

  • Bread not always perfectly domed

  2. Loving your list Jack,

Especially the Zojirushi! Call me crazy but I’ve always had this feeling that Japanese brands are of the if not the best for food especially bread.  I’ve been making bread manually and putting them in ovens but it always comes in shapes I  cannot control since the oven is huge, do you think Zajirushi is able to make great-shaped bread?

  3. Bread machines can be so great for people who want to make their own bread but are “baking challenged”. As I was reading, I thought about a couple of things I know: I work as a farmer’s market manager and the bread vendor sells flour that is freshly milled from locally grown wheat. The ingredients you use can make a difference in the taste, quality, and, ultimately, health of the resulting loaf.

Another strange result of the pandemic is a mild shortage of yeast, at least where I live. If you can find someone with a sourdough starter, you can keep it going forever.

I can say honestly this is great and I will have to make ready for the purchase of it someday.

  5. Hey Jack

This is really timely. I was asking a friend today about the machine she is using for her homemade bread. This is the idea I have been contemplating on for a long. I like the idea of knowing the ingredients that go into your bread. You have made great recommendations here, it’s hard to decide, I will have to come back to this article before I purchase any bread machine. Thank you
